Rants and makeup

Gyaru doesnt have rules…

I’ve been hearing this a lot lately and I have to say that I kind of agree. Only in the sense that there is no rule book stating that to be gyaru you have to do a, b and c. I do think that gyaru as well as other fashion substyles have implied rules. If there where no implied rules then why have a need at stamp a label on our choice of style? We would all just be “fashionable”.

If you all see a girl in a ruffled shirt, a knee length poofy skirt and ballet flats who called herself lolita would you accept it? Would you shrug and go…”well its her personal style so if she says she is a lolita then she is one”. I honestly think those of you who know the style would tell her, in fact, that what she is doing is not lolita and that yes while she may have an element or two that can be associated with the style, she will need to work a lot harder to be identified as a lolita.
This is the point that I think some of the older gen gyaru are trying to get across. Just because you have the makings of a gyaru doesn’t make you gyaru.Dont let anons discourage because that only means that they win. So keep working hard and dont let critiques keep you down. For the most part these gals just want you to look better so you can represent gyaru with pride!
Believe me when I say we are the last people on earth to look down on you because you’re just starting out. We had to work our way up to where we are today. And some of us, me for example, are still working on improving our style and becoming a better gyaru.
And to the old gen gyaru who critique new gen gals…remember you were once in their shoes. Remember there is a difference between being blunt/honest and being a bitch. Some of these newbies are extremely nervous and fragile when it comes to getting critiques, so as long as they are willing to listen and learn, you should be understanding and patient.

Basic Gyaru

The following is just a list of things that I think make gyaru stand out from other subcultures as well as things I look for in myself and when asked to critique other gyaru.

  • A contoured Face- I believe this to be essential in achieving the gyaru look. Most if not all of the gals you see contour their entire face to have sharper more “european” features.
  • Well maintained eyebrows- I realize some gals really like their natural eyebrow shape…and thats cool but that doesn’t mean you cant thin them out and fill them in. Once again most if not all gyaru have their eyebrows filled in with some kind of brow powder to match their hair color. Though I suggest if you have black or dark brown hair that you use a dark brown/brown pencil or eyebrow powder.
  • False eyelashes- Gyaru is about having bold eyes that pop. So wearing top and or bottom lashes will help achieve a bold eye look.
  • Eyeliner- once again…the whole “bold eyes” idea comes into play. While you dont have to go crazy manba style with your eyeliner it would be ideal to apply it in such a way that allow your eyes to pop. A signature gyaru eyeliner look would be the “droopy” eye look. Personally I think it fits every gal and can be modified enough to fit everyones personal taste.
  • Bronzer and Blush- Ive seen these two items over and over again in magazines and they are both used in every gyaru substyle. Though heavy use of blush is a gyaru signature. I mean…they’re make-up staples.
  • Styled Hair- From box braids to pin straight and down to your bum, gyaru hair is well styled and well maintained(ideally…we’ve all seen some messed up weave/hair even on our favorite gyaru)
  • Circle lenses- I know I know “You dont need circle lenses”. Well…you dont BUT they really help us as western gyaru, stick out from all the other fashionable girls around us. Even putting on a pair of normal colored contact lenses will help set off any gyaru look.
  • Once again this is just a list of basic things I think help set off gyaru from other fashions/lifestyles. We’re not even gonna jump into the different things you need for different substyles…

now for makeup and clothes ^-^

  4. I agree. They're are no rules. But there are a set of characteristics exclusive to gyaru and that most gyarus wear. Like circle lenses, big hair, long gaudy nails, etc. I guess that where the "there are no rule, but this is what gyaru is" mentality comes from. I love gyaru and although I prefer not to be one, I draw alot of inspiration from and admire them. <3

You should do a hair tutorial. I saw your lates picture on tumblr and I fell in love with i! (^_^)
